What is a “High Conflict” Divorce?

Studies show that 25-30% of divorces can be referred to as “high conflict” and most represent parents who repeatedly return to family court for relief in deciding matters that have little to do with the law and much to do with the welfare of the children involved.  We’ve all seen them in our offices, in the court room, and in Family Court mediation!  What are the hallmarks of these so-called “high conflict” families?

Working with divorcing parents or parents in custody disputes can be extremely difficult. The cause of the high conflict cycle with this population is, to a great degree, misunderstood and frequently mismanaged. The default statement that “parents need to get along for the sake of the children” doesn’t take into account the fact that some of these parents are not capable, not because they refuse or they are stubborn, but because the wiring in their brain is upset by emotionally intense, traumatic experiences and/or substance abuse issues.  Drawing upon the vast research in the area of personality disorders, we can draw parallels to apply to the emotionally intense experiences of parent in high conflict disputes.
In this segment of the High Conflict Diversion Program Tele-seminar Series for Professionals, Brook will discuss strategies for managing the emotionally intense client and the advantages of using the “Parallel Parenting” model early in the divorce process.  The Parallel Parenting approach teaches parents how to disengage (learning to manage the conflict cycle) before they can successfully re-engage through Co-Parenting techniques.
