What is a “High Conflict” Divorce?

Studies show that 25-30% of divorces can be referred to as “high conflict” and most represent parents who repeatedly return to family court for relief in deciding matters that have little to do with the law and much to do with the welfare of the children involved.  We’ve all seen them in our offices, in the court room, and in Family Court mediation!  What are the hallmarks of these so-called “high conflict” families?

Working with divorcing parents or parents in custody disputes can be extremely difficult. The cause of the high conflict cycle with this population is, to a great degree, misunderstood and frequently mismanaged. The default statement that “parents need to get along for the sake of the children” doesn’t take into account the fact that some of these parents are not capable, not because they refuse or they are stubborn, but because the wiring in their brain is upset by emotionally intense, traumatic experiences and/or substance abuse issues.  Drawing upon the vast research in the area of personality disorders, we can draw parallels to apply to the emotionally intense experiences of parent in high conflict disputes.

Would you like to learn more about the dynamics of parents in high conflict? By better understanding what perpetuates the chaotic cycle of conflict some parents find themselves caught in, the professionals working with these parents can better manage their client and the case as a whole. On October at 12:00 pm pacific time, Brook Olsen, the founder and director of the acclaimed High Conflict Diversion Program,  will  present a 1 hour free tele-seminar for attorneys, judges, mediators, therapists and parenting educators interested in learning more about managing high conflict divorces.

In this segment of the High Conflict Diversion Program Tele-seminar Series for Professionals, Brook will discuss some of the clients beliefs about controlling the course of events and the behavior of the other parent, getting them to come into acceptance that they have little control and directing them toward the health and wellbeing of their children.  He will discuss the role the family court system plays in perpetuating the conflict and offer some tools for managing this difficult population. This seminar is free to all that attend and will prove to be well worth the time spent in this engaging discussion.

I look forward to talking to you soon.
